Flat roofs are less expensive to construct, easier to repair, require less maintenance, and allow for more flexibility. Also, they have the ability to be designed to mimic many existing structures such as homes, barns, and factories.
However, flat roofs are not always the best choice. They are more susceptible to damage from ice and water, are not as energy efficient, and have the potential for collapse due to improper installation. Additionally, the pitch of a roof can depend upon the location of a home, which may make the perfect pitch impossible to achieve if it is pitched to the side of a house. On the other hand, a slope can also increase the cost of a home. Also, a slope is more difficult to build with, requiring higher walls.
As was mentioned earlier, flat roofs commonly used in urban centers and high rises. These roofs have the potential of collapse due to wind and earthquakes, so many developers prefer to use them. Furthermore, the cost of such roofs is much lower than a sloped roof. This allows projects to be completed much faster and can provide more energy efficient housing.
